Via Trenta Osteria in Astoria, NY : A Review

Nestled in the heart of Astoria’s famous 30th ave, Via Trenta Osteria transports its visitors straight to the pasta heaven of the world, Italy. The restaurant prides itself on its authentic Italian cuisine, where every dish tells a story of regional traditions and grandmother’s secret recipes. Using only the freshest ingredients, Via Trenta serves up a culinary tour of Italy – from the delicate, buttery flavors of their house-made pasta to the robust and hearty flatbread inspired, elongated pizzas baked in a brick oven. Each meal is paired with fantastic selection of wines, that enhance the rich flavors on the plate while not breaking the bank. With its attentive service, comfortable ambiance and delicious food, Trattoria da Luigi offers not just a meal, but a genuine Italian experience.

We are big fans of Via Trenta and when we go we try to order a different dish every-time. For this review we decided to order an appetizer and two entrees. We started off our meal with the Prosciutto di Parma e Burrata. If we are ever in a restaurant and they serve burrata, its usually our go to appetizer. As wine lover, a good burrata paired with a nice glass is a fantastic way to start the meal. The burrata and Via Trenta was creamy, and great with their bread and prosciutto. The combination of the three presented a very well balanced bite. We do recommend adding a bit of olive oil and basil on top to really enhance the flavors. The prosciutto we found to be perfectly salty and added a nice little kick to the creaminess of the cheese.

For our entrees we ordered Tartufata Pizza (Pecorino, mozzarella, fontina, mushrooms and truffle cream). The pizza had a great crust with just a slight char to give it that extra crunch. The cheese on the pizza was OMG fantastic, the mushrooms were cut just thick enough and had a great bite. As people who love truffle, we would have liked a little bit more presence from it but the subtleness of the truffle cream really kicked in that mushroomy flavor. All in all a great pizza for anybody who enjoy mushroom and truffle flavors.

For our second entree we decided to do something different and ordered the Cosciotto di Agnello (Braised lamb shank, with saffron risotto). We usually go to Via Trenta for the pasta but the manager/owner really recommended we try the lamb shank and so we did. The risotto accompanying the lamb had a great texture, was cooked well but was lacking flavor unfortunately. We know the saffron was saffron flavored which was present, but it just needed a little something else. The lamb on the other hand was cooked to perfection. The meat fell off the bone and curry on the lamb was spicy but delicious. The lamb really reminded of lamb curry I used to eat as a child so it was an interesting kick to my nostalgic taste buds. All in all, I would recommend getting the lamb shank, mixing in the curry with the risotto does provide it with some of the missing flavors.

All in all, we had a fantastic meal and will be returning for a date night. If you are in Astoria and wondering where to go eat, go ahead and give Via Trenta a try. Too much alcohol on the nose? I describe it as the wine being hot. Try cooling it down. You can also tell if the wine is too cold if you can’t smell anything on the wine… warm it up by wrapping your hands agains the glass.
